My background: I'm a gadget geek but I'm not super devoted to any platform. I do love Google's web products but never used their hardware. My laptop is a 13" MacBook Pro and my desktop is a Mac Mini that runs both OS X and Windows 7 (I spend more time on Win 7 these days). I have an iPad (3rd gen) and Motorola Droid Razr Maxx along with a docking station. My wife has a Win 7 ultrabook, Kindle Fire HD and Razr Maxx, all of which I purchased for her.

I'm an editor for a web-based publication so my usage is primarily writing and some light (very light) image editing. I've done most of my writing on Google Docs for a long time because it automatically saves and I hate writing directly into the CMS. We also use Google Apps Business for e-mail, calendaring and doc sharing so that rocks.

The last thing I need is another computer but Chromebook called to me. A couple of reasons:

- The docking solution wasn't great. The keyboard was crap, my phone got unusually hot and interacting with the CMS was hit and miss with the phone OS. It was good for e-mails.
- An iPad with a keyboard is garbage. I've tried it and hit the same issues. It is just clumsy for my primary work. I still travel with an iPad because it is light and its battery is a rockstar and can do in a pinch.
- The laptop is fine but it is a beast to carry. I just got back from a week-long jaunt to three conferences and I think my shoulder is broken from my shoulder bag.
- I love my phone and tethering has been a lifesaver. No complaints.
Okay, enough background. Now to the actual review.

Unboxing wasn't particularly impressive but I don't really care. Standard laptop box with the laptop, an AC adapter and Chrome sticker. I plugged it in and it was at about 75%. Now about an hour later, it is nearly charged.

When I pulled it out of the box, it almost felt like a laptop that didn't have a battery in it (remember that?). Anyway, it feels solid closed up. I don't have any problem throwing this in my engineer's bag and feeling like it will get screwed up. The AC adapter is your standard black box with two cords.

I opened up the lid and it started immediately. It asked me to connect to my wifi connection and then proceeded to download the latest update of the operating system (version 23 according to the info in Chrome). After a quick reboot, I put in my Google credentials and it loaded everything I use in my Chrome browser normally, including my apps and bookmarks.

Opened up, the build quality showed a few weaknesses but nothing major. There's a little give on the keyboard and palm rest. I didn't feel any problems holding the laptop from its corner. It feels very solid overall. The thing to remember, of course, is that I came from a unibody MacBook Pro so take that for what it is worth.

The keyboard blew my expectations away. I figured it would be fairly cramped and that my typing speed would suffer. I figured the action wouldn't be very good either. But, coming from a MacBook Pro chiclet keyboard to this was a cinch. I feel very little difference in typing speed or accuracy. This was really a big deal for me. I tried the HP Mini a few years ago and it was awful. A few millimeter difference is it.

The trackpad is very good though not as top notch of a comparison as the keyboard. It is very Mac-like in using it. The two finger swipe gestures, right-clicking, dragging, etc... it all operated like I expected. I'm a tapper, not a clicker so that may have something to do with it. It doesn't seem like it is quite as accurate or response as the MacBook Pro but still very good.

The screen isn't great but it isn't a dealbreaker. For text, it performs adequately but not spectacularly. For video, it is quite adequate, maybe above average but again, not fantastic. The screen brightness isn't what it could be, I feel like it is a tick or two off what should be standard brightness. But, I am also used to glossy screens and even with the brightness, the matte screen seems to do okay. I work right next to south-facing windows and even though we have no sun here in Seattle, it gets fairly bright and it seems good in these conditions. The viewing angles aren't going to impress anyone but it works for me.

The speakers seem to be pretty good and loud enough. They are optimal for use on a desk rather than a lap though as the sound gets muffled a bit by clothing. I put on Pandora One and the sound through my nice $100 studio headphones sounds pretty good with the top volume topping out just right. Using my Apple headphone/mic combo, it worked well in a hangout. One thing is that the headphone jack seems very tight.

I hit my first snag when I tried to do HDMI out. It didn't seem to work. Then I read a bit more and got it to work with the Ctrl+Full Screen and that seemed to do it. Depending on your monitor, your results may vary. It actually looked great on my LCD TV (including sound) but the resolution needs to be adjusted. It didn't look good (ironically) on my Samsung 21 inch monitor. There might be some settings I'm missing on either side but it's not a huge deal. Testing the video on the 1920x1080 HDTV, it worked great other than the overscanning.

The camera is something that Monet would appreciate. You'll get the gist of it but this is no HD cam. It is good for basic pictures and compares unfavorably to the front-facing camera on my Droid Razr Maxx.

After an hour of use off the charger, the heat situation is non-existent. This thing is creepily quiet and cool to the touch except for a few warmer spots. I will end up watching a movie to see how it reacts but that would be a nice change. Even my iPad gets warmer.

I had no opportunity to try out the bluetooth or the SD card reader. I will be getting a 32 GB SD card. I did try out a USB drive and it seems to be working just fine.

Getting into the software and how it drives on the ARM processor, I was pretty impressed. I opened about 18 tabs (which is well beyond my max, typically) and I had Pandora running in the background the entire time and didn't get a stutter. At times, the load was sluggish but again, I am switching between this and a MacBook Pro with 8GB of RAM and a dual-core i5. But I really expected this to be flawless when using the web. As long as you don't go crazy with tabs or the apps you are driving in them, you should be good.

Watching videos, outside of the screen quality, was really quite smooth. From someone who bought the original Kindle Fire and saw it stumble with streaming video for just $50 less, I was super-impressed. I don't know if power-users will love it but it works with my slightly-lowered expectations.

That being said, this is a web enabled device and there are a few (very few) apps that I use regularly.

My stand-alone apps that I use regularly is chat (Google and AIM) and Tweetdeck. Both Tweetdeck and imo seem to work pretty good in a browser. If anyone has any suggestions, let me know.

I also know that Skype doesn't work great right now. I am using it through imo but, at least as far as I can tell, I can't make dial-out calls like the Skype app allows on all of my other devices. This, including no support for a USB headset, would make it tough to make this a full-time replacement. I live on Skype as a dial-out provider (Google dial-out will not allow me to use certain conference call providers plus Skype is great for connecting with people worldwide with ease). I'm hoping a promised webapp version is coming soon. On the plus side, Skype works great on my cell and iPad.

I turned off the wifi connection and it worked liked it should. You need to turn on offline mode in Gmail and Google Drive in order for it to work but after that, it worked like it always has. Games that I had loaded for offline mode worked. Offline, this is a pretty limited machine but not unduly so.

Chrome remote desktop worked particularly well. Granted, I was using it on the same network but there was no lag on the software side of using it. I was, again, thoroughly impressed with the graphics. Though, one thing would be to allow me to select which screen I view when I am using a dual-display.

I'm looking forward to Netflix capability but that's not ultra-critical right now for me. Amazon Instant works well for me, as does Hulu.

I'm taking only this when I go on an extended trip this weekend so I can update more on real battery life and any other real-world experiences of using it later.

Overall, this is what I expected and I am pretty happy with the purchase, especially as one of my first sight-unseen types of purchase. For my uses as a primary road writing device for blog posts and e-mails, this is a solid, solid play. And for $250, it's pretty unbelievable. All of this typed into the new Chromebook as well at my normal rate.

== UPDATE 10/28/2012 ==

Just took this thing on a weekend away without bringing my laptop. This is a big deal as even if I took my iPad, I would normally take my laptop as well. A couple of additional thoughts from 72 hours as my primary computer.

I did end up getting a SD Card (a 32 GB one from Amazon) and putting it in the SD card slot. Unfortunately, it sticks out from the side pretty well (about a centimeter looking straight down on it). I loaded it with a few movies and some music so I would have some tunes and movies for offline. The player works fine but is very basic. Other than wishing the SD card would seat all the way in, it is a good setup for leisurely watching movies solo.

I also did some extended work while my wife was driving. I typed two articles and I can't emphasize enough how good of quality this keyboard is. Even working it off of my lap, it performed beyond its price point.

I typed those articles offline and using Google Docs offline worked as expected. When I reconnected, my documents synced up no problem. This worked exactly like it had on my MacBook Pro whenever I took it on a flight without wifi so no surprises there.

Under normal use, the battery is probably going to be right there in the 6.5 hour range. Google could have pushed this spec. Working offline with the screen brightness at 50%, I was able to squeeze a little over 2 hours into 25% of battery life.

Speaking of brightness, the ambient light sensor works pretty well. Maybe a little too good in the car as it would dim slightly as we went under overpasses on the freeway.

The other thing I wanted to do is try out the some games. I played Angry Birds because I could compare it across all devices and the Chromebook is definitely lagging in performance. It was just a step behind and could be a bit choppy. I also tried the most popular game Entanglement and it seemed to perform well though it is simple. I also did a fantasy basketball draft on Yahoo sports and it was also a step behind.

I'll also mention that the first time I loaded up Entanglement was the first time the Chromebook crashed on me. I don't imagine it will happen that often but the nice thing is that it recovered everything I had up in about 20 seconds. Also, it is the first time I noticed heat of any kind coming from the laptop at all. Not unusually hot but it will warm up some when going graphics and CPU intensive.

In any case, I stand by my 4 star review. Even with some minor performance issues and a few smaller issues with quality, this is still an excellent purchase. An improved screen and battery life would make it easier to look past the sometimes-lagging performance. I won't be getting rid of my MacBook Pro but I am looking forward to taking this thing on the road and getting a good chunk of the functionality without the weight.

This 11.6" 1.0Ghz [1.33 turbo] netbook packs a punch for its size and low power consumption. The AMD C-60 mobile dual core processor runs well enough to play videos without skipping and efficiently enough to stay charged for as much as 7 hours. I opted for this model over the earlier 722-454 version for several reasons: its dual core processor, 2GB of RAM installed/ upgradable to 4GB, and 320GB hard drive.

If you're still not sold on a netbook over a tablet or standard laptop read on.

Tablets are still recreational devices, fun, chic in cafes, but they're still mostly for playing games and looking busier than you actually are. They have a few practical features, but all require a keyboard, which is an extra expense, and conveniently included with a netbook! If you do a lot of writing, typing, or work related proposals and editing, the DataViz optional word processor for Android tablets won't replace MS Office. It has limited functionality and frequently crashes without auto-saving. If you're thinking about an iPad or AirBook, remember, you're buying into a complete product line of computers, music, videos and applications which are virtually useless on non-Apple devices. If you buy one Apple product, you have to buy them all. This is great for some, but expensive for most.

As I said, if you're comparing this netbook to a traditional laptop, this model doesn't require you to make a lot of sacrifices in your performance expectations. Just remember, netbooks don't have CD/DVD drives, no 10-key, and smaller screens. One complaint I have with this model is that it's missing a built-in bluetooth antenna. Irritating, but easily remedied with a low-profile USB dongle in one of the three available USB ports, which is more than on most netbooks. I would recommend spending the extra $25 to upgrade the RAM to 4GB when you purchase it. It's very easy to install yourself--no under the keyboard poking around required. There's a single philip's head screw in the middle of the bottom plate, unscrew it, slide forward and you'll find the single DIMM looking right at you. Anybody who played with shape blocks as a kid can figure it out. All in all, this is a good buy for 329.99. It's cheaper than most tablets and standard laptops and you can use it for actual work out of the box, no extra $50 keyboards required. Please reply if you have any other questions I can answer.

Great little machine for the first 15 minutes. I took the PC off my lap and set it on the table. The display went crazy. I had to remove the battery in order to reboot. I went to the ASUS web site, registered the product and did all the updates hoping for a driver issue. Updated BIOS and drivers to no avail. I have sent a request to ASUS for warranty support and I am still waiting for them to get back to me.

I have discovered that if I gently squeeze on the bottom of the display that the picture will come back. All the signs of a loose connection or broken solder joint.

Update as of 10/16/2012
I have finally communicated with ASUS and their authorized service center. An RMA repair order was issued without any problem and I recieved shipping instructions. I shipped via UPS ground at an additional cost of $12.00 to get this unit repaired. I will update on condition when I recieve the unit back.

Great little netbook at an affordable price. Specs are pretty standard for a 2010/2011 netbook: 1G RAM, 250Gb HD, 3 USB ports, basic video camera, separate Mic & headphone jacks, sd card slot, vga output and a very useful 8h battery life.

There are a lot of netbooks like this on the market, but what really stands out for me on this one is the keyboard, FULL size main keys with ALL the cursor movement keys: DEDICATED up, down, right,left, PGUP, PGDN, HOME and END. I work a lot with excel spreadsheets and it is really uncomfortable to move pressing fn+end/up orf+end/down or ctrl+fn+home, ctrl+fn+end, etc. to move around. Also scrolling with pgup/pgdown while reading a long web page is a pain when you have to press also the fn key! With most netbooks you have to live with the fn key, not in this case, the NB505 keyboard is really practical and comfortable, almost like a full laptop or pc keyboard, even do the position of the keys is not standard, they let you do the work easier and faster.

I also really like the case feeling: like some very soft rubbery cover, it looks nice and grips nice!

Windows 7 Starter is really basic, but you can find programs, utilities and tips on the Internet to take care of the basic "missing features" like changing the background image, colors, sounds, re-size pictures, etc. I got rid of most of the Toshiba utilities and also Norton, and installed MS Security and my preferred freeware home edition utilities.

I would have liked to have stereo speakers, but the netbook only includes a mono speaker under the unit.

I have older Toshiba laptops with excellent experience, in fact they are still working (WIN98, 450Mb HD,64Mb RAM)! so I decided to take the risk and bought the netbook from Amazon. It arrived fast, and working OK! (no DOA).

Its been a month since I got the netbook and I am still happy, but I think I will upgrade the memory to 2Gb, to make it snappier, I find Win7 heavier than Win XP for 1 gb of RAM (but that is just my feeling...).

All in all, I WOULD recommend it to my friends!

*** UPDATE **** July 2011 ****
I did upgrade the memory to 2Gb on February'11 and it works faster, but, if you plan to do it, just be aware of THIS: (info from the Toshiba support web site)

"NOTE: Two types of DDR memory are used in the Toshiba NB500 and NB505 netbook series. In order to upgrade, you WILL NEED to determine the current memory speed of your Netbook before you buy and replace it:
1) Locate the gray part number label on bottom of machine.
2) If there is a "D3" in the UPPER RIGHT HAND CORNER of the label, then DDR3 memory is installed, upgrade using the following: "PA3856U-1M2G Toshiba DDR3-1066MHz, 2GB Memory" or compatible.
3) All other units, assembled with DDR2 memory, upgrade using the following module: "PA3669U-1M2G, Toshiba DDR2-800MHz, 2GB memory Module" or compatible (cheaper).
Alternate Identification Method (Serial Number):
1) PLL50U-01900C(5B294965K or greater, or a serial number starting with 6B ,7B , 8B) use DDR3.
2) PLL50U-01900C(5B294964K or less, or a serial number starting with 4B,3B , 2B ,1B, ZA, YA, or XA)- use DDR2."

The recent Amazon sub 239 tariff keeps this form factor relevant, as does the battery life, but be sure to check out the Acer Aspire One AO756-2808 11.6-Inch Netbook (Ash Black) as well, at least when Amazon has it back in stock for 3 bills or so. 7-19-12 note

The best reasons for buying the Acer AOD 270:

* One of the best netbbook screens - pretty evenly illuminated, and sufficient latitude in viewing angles so that when you are centered, none of the corners or edges are showing signs of diffracting.

Don't laugh, on some netbooks and even notebooks, the viewing angles can be SO limited that even if your head is centered relative to the screen, some part of the screen will be shaded, washed out, or diffracted.

Videos look pretty good on the AOD270 (but not as good as on a flat screen tv).

(If you want "great" video, you will probably have to move up to the much more expensive Macbook Air or shift to a completely different experience in the form of an iPad with its multi-angle IPS display.)

* Very thin design, very light, especially with the 3 cell battery, which can be purchased separately if you start with this 6 cell version. Note that this netbook and almost all non-Apple laptops come with somewhat short-lived batteries, good for two to four years (depends on charge cycles) before the loss of battery life drives you to buy a new battery (which you can replace yourself, cheaply, which helps compensate for the battery mortality). (Since the review I took the 6 cell battery off an earlier Acer netbook and put in on this newer unit, and it works fine and adds a couple of hours of battery life; it doesn't stick out for the bottom too much.)

* Screen tilts back far enough so that you won't have viewing angle problems if using this on a kitchen counter while standing up.

* Larger keys with acceptable spacing. Intuitive "break" on the keys so tactile feedback is there that your keystroke was accepted. (A little noisy though.)

* Plays 480p (DVD quality) video smoothly, with fewer minor glitches with downloaded vs. streaming content (since streaming imposes an additional processing overhead)

* HDMI port lets you hook this up to your (modern) flat screen tv to play Hulu content, which you can't get on a Roku (without paying a subscription fee, although the fee includes additional video content).

* Great alternative to an iPad if you are on a budget, or a great supplement to an iPad if you type a lot. Despite the many accessory keyboards for iPads, the keyboard on most netbooks is superior. Pros for the iPad? Instant on, superior viewing angles, incredible screen on the "new" or "3" iPad, incredible battery life. Cons - won't run Windows programs (huge if you have wordprocessing and other office needs, or want to run a blog).

* Great alternative to a Macbook Air if you are on a budget, if you worry about theft or damage (netbooks are priced so low as to be a "no worry" item), or if you worry about getting the wrong type of attention. Of course the Macbook Air weighs the same but has a larger screen, larger keyboard, and the keyboard is back-illuminated for easy typing in low light or the dark, making it the ultimate production netbook (even though Apple denies it is a netbook, LOL).

Finally, this Atom N2600 netbook is incredibly zippy once you clean out some of the bloatware and install a leaner antivirus program (Microsoft Security Essentials is completely free and very efficent, both in detecting threats and having a small footprint in RAM).

Here is my routine for setting up a new netbook (this applies to versions from other makers as well):

1. Don't accept the offer to install the commercial antivirus program which has a "free" trial offer. It's designed for computers with a lot more memory and processing power, and is the number one cause of sluggishness in netbooks. Don't worry about the "unprotected" messages you will get because you will fix that right away.

2. After booting up the first time, open Internet Explorer and say "no" to the guided tour and any other options, then enter "download Google Chrome" into the search box (or Chrome Beta, which has always been stable for me). Note how much space Internet Explorer wastes on the top of the screen, when Chrome opens you will see a much cleaner but highly functional browser window).

3. Install Google Chrome - just follow the simple on-screen instructions.

4. In the Google search box (Google lets you choose among search engines when you install it, I like Google best although Bing from Microsoft is also quite good) search for "download MSE" which will take you to the Microsoft page to download Microsoft Security Essentials. Select the 32 bit version if offered a choice.

5. Install and run Microsoft Security Essentials. I would run your first scan later, after cleaning up your new netbook. When asked if you want the firewall turned on, say yes.

6. While waiting for the above downloads, right click on the desktop and select Properties and select the option to relocate your Taskbar from its default location at the bottom of the screen to a new location on the left or right of the screen. This gives you extra vertical screen space, which is more valuable than the horizontal screen space since the netbook comes with a pretty short horizontal screen space. You'll see what I mean when you work in your web browser - plenty of text left to right but you won't get as much top to bottom as text as you will probably want without using a minimalist browser like Chrome plus moving the Taskbar.

7. Download PC Decrapifier (pcdecrapifier dot com) and run it. Although you can run it is a single pass, I find that pops up too many option windows at the same time. McAfee Antivirus in particular is somewhat convoluted to uninstall, so I recommend un-checking the uninstall boxes so that only McAfee is left, and uninstalling it using the cleanup program first. Then run PC Decrapifier a second time and let it uninstall all programs, including all Acer programs. None of them are needed, even the webcam (Google Talk and Skype have their own programs to run the webcam), and if you suffer cleaner's remorse later, just go to the Acer website (support dot acer dot com) and reinstall them, it's easy. DON'T uninstall Microsoft Security Essentials! Don't stress about the dire warnings you will get from McAfee as you uninstall it. MSE is there, direct from Microsoft, to take care of you.

8. After rebooting once or more times to complete the uninstallation, download "CCleaner" from FileHippo (Google download CCLeaner, go to the Piriform website, select the free option, and download). When installing, uncheck every installation option box EXCEPT the desktop shortcut box at the top.

9. You can ignore all menu options in CCleaner except the blue "Registry" icon in the left-most column. Click on that. (The little brick building.) Then click "Scan for Issues" on the bottom off the white box. Then "Fix Selected Issues". "Save Registry" (your computer won't explode if you forget to do this). "Fix All Selected Issues." Then, scan again because often it takes two or three passes to catch and fix all issues. Reboot.

10. Click on the Start Menu, then Computer (far right column), then right click on the hard drive and select "Properties." Unclick the "file indexing" option at the bottom of the Properties window, when it asks "subdirectories too" include subdirectories, and let the un-indexing go to work. This will take some time.

11. Go to the Control Panel (Click the globe in the Start menu, or tap the Windows flag key in the lower left of your keyboard.) Then use the search box in the upper right hand corner of the Control Panel window to search for "defrag". Click on the "Defragment your hard drive" option and select the schedule option; when selected, select "never defrag." You can run this yourself manually every six months.

Indexing and defragging run in the background but slow down your netbook. They aren't necessary for a good Windows experience.

12. This is optional. Go to Sourceforge dot net and download Foobar200, a simple but lean music player, and VLC, a simple but lean video player.

13. If you are brave, turn off automatic Windows updates. I set the option to "notify me and let me choose when to install" so my netbook doesn't suddenly get bogged down at a cafe. I do the updates later, at home, when I can switch to working on a desktop. I won't tell you how to do this, it's easy, but if you can't navigate Windows to this extent, you probably should just suffer through the sluggishness while Windows installs updates while you are working, rather than risk an out of date, and hence vulnerable, machine.

14. No matter how many times Windows Updates offers to install Bing Desktop, it is safe to ignore.

15. Tweaks dot come has a Windows logon screen changer. Search their site for "logon" or go to [...] (Replace "dot" with . and close the space to make the link work).

I hope this helps. It is faster than it reads, and makes a huge difference in performance. Look at it this way - you just saved the difference in price between a Macbook Air and this Acer.

For the mechanically minded: Adding an extra gig of memory SLIGHTLY improves performance with more windows, or browser tabs, open. [8-20-12 update - I got bold and stuck a left-over 4gb RAM stick in the D270 - Control Panel recognized the entire 4gb of RAM, but Windows 7 Starter is only 32-bit so the operating system would only recognize and use 3gb of that. That was a REAL 3gb for WIndows itself, though, since whatever RAM is being set aside for the video doesn't count against that (Task Manager reports 3gb available, where before, with 2gb, Task Manager reported only about 1.7 gb available since the rest being used by video). Now that memory has dropped down so low in price, you MIGHT want to consider replacing the 1 gb RAM module with a 4 gb module instead of a 2 gb. I was afraid the BIOS or chipset might be incapable of addressing a 4gb stick, but based on my experimentation this is NOT a problem. WEI scores DROPPED to 3.2, 4.6, 5.6, 3.2 and 7.8 on the first test run, and improved slightly to 3.3, 4.7, 5.6, 3.2, and 7.8 on the second test run (I have an SSD which is why the HDD component is so high). In my experience the first time you run a "re-fresh" the scores on WEI are unreliable, you have to run the full, slower re-assessment after the "re-fresh" is finished to get stable scores. I have no idea why both video scores dropped, but in practice Hulu is rock-solid and if anything, desktop video effects (opening and minimizing windows etc.) seem snappier. Maybe there is just more video memory for the chipset to use now, and while that is good in practice, it means more to move around for the WEI test. Please comment if you know what might be going on.]

To access the memory slot, first remove the battery, then the keyboard by locating the four small tabs at the top of the Function key row that are holding it in. These tabs are released, one by one, by pushing back, not down, and you need to be ready with a thin bladed screw driver or something thin like a nail file to pry the keyboard up, tab by tab. Once the tabs are released, you will see the keyboard has a flat ribbon connection to the body. You can either lay the keyboard out of the way and remove the FIVE screws, each marked "back cover", then push your screwdriver into the square hole marked "cover release" to start releasing the back cover. Then being careful with the ribbon connector and the keyboard, turn the netbook over and gradually work the back panel off, it has snap tabs, start at the section that you opened slightly from the front side. Memory replacement is then easy. To replace the back panel, slide the edge nearest the battery compartment in FIRST, then snap around the edges to seat the other sides. Replace the screws, lay the keyboard back in, then snap it down along the top front edge. NOTE: you can also disconnect then reconnect the ribbon to the keyboard. To do this, note the dark gray, almost black, plastic bar lying across the top of the ribbon where it enters the connector on the panel under the keyboard (on the netbook body). On some ribbon connectors, such a clamp will slide towards the ribbon to relieve pressure, but on this design, it swings up and off the cable, so just use your finger nail to flip it up. When reassembling, be sure to push the ribbon in evenly so the black line aligns with the clamp, then close the clamp.

*** on 8-1-12 I replaced the stock hard drive with a 128gb SSD - this netbook takes a 9.5 mm high drive. You can use one of the emerging 7.0mm high drives BUT be forewarned that the hard drive does NOT screw into the bay, it relies on "perfect fit" to keep everything in place! So if you use a 7.0 mm drive, you risk it shifting around unless you fabricate a space. For this reason I recommend a 9.5 mm drive like the Crucial 128 GB m4 2.5-Inch Solid State Drive SATA 6Gb/s CT128M4SSD2. After installing, the WEI for the hard drive shot up from 5.9 to 7.8, a very significant increase, and disk intensive operations like virus scans run much faster. If you decide to replace your drive, you remove the old one by looking for the end with the connector, then lifting up the OTHER end. Then, without disturbing the connector's connection to the motherboard (use your finger to hold it down, in place!) just wiggle/pry the hard drive off the connector. To install the new SSD, just push it onto the connector until fully mounted then lay the drive into the hard driver slot and close up the cover. For software, you have 3 choices: cloning software, recovery disks, or new install. I believe if you download the Acronis disk clone software from Western Digital, it will also work on this drive, but I used the version that came with an old Kingston SSD so I can't guarantee it. For recovery disks, you either buy a set from Acer for about $15 including shipping beforehand, or generate your own set by using the included Acer utility program (which you can easily download and reinstall from the Acer Support website). New installs are complicated - I have done them from recovery disks from other netbooks, then re-entered the code from the bottom of my netbook, it is hard to get Win 7 Starter install media. The one work around I used once was to upgrade to Home Premium first, write down the new license number, use a Home Premium 32 bit disk to install, then entered my old unit's upgrade license number. I understand that Windows recovery disk images are available from Microsoft Support online for free (since they won't work without entering a license number off your old unit), but you would need to track those down.

CAUTION regarding video driver update: I am a big believer in applying all driver updates presented on the manufacturer's website. Especially the video drivers for this new Atom N2600 chip which is running the new Intel GMA 3600 video chip (very similar video chip to that used in the iPad). HOWEVER when I updated to the .1075 driver on the Acer website, my videos became choppy. As soon as I returned to the earlier VGA driver (.1065) on the Acer website, all my graphics problems went away. The other driver updates on their website are running fine on my machine. YMMV, so don't hesitate to switch the two drivers around to find one that works best for you.
