First, the netbook is a cheap portable computer that match the ULCPC (ultra-low cost personal computer), see netbooks on the market, it clearly allows for the Intel Atom processor, 1GB memory, 160GB hard drive and 12-inch screen.
Second, the netbook is a functional one. A netbook is a cheap portable computer that is suitable for using net-based applications like Gmail. It is not designed for running large desktop applications, especially for multi-tasking. But netbooks are optimized for long battery life, not for performance.
This is what makes so netbooks will tend to have a screen smaller than a notebook. that the large screen will use more power (shortening battery life) and much less portable than a small screen.
Intel's Atom chip fit for netbooks because of the small, inexpensive and highly efficient (long battery life) but not very strong. If you want to run large applications, or multi-tasking, then you are much better with Core 2 Duo 64-bit (410 million transistors, 3MB L2 Cache) of 32-bit Atom (47m transistors, 512K L2 cache). Another major drawback Intel Atom is that it can not handle out-of-order instructions. Atom wins in power consumption (4W instead of 65W).
The third definition is that all the producers decided to call a netbook. there is no hard and fast definition of a netbook.
Is there an alternative to a netbook with long battery power but still has a high performance?
One alternative is to have it with a system of CULV (Consumer Ultra Low Voltage) as in acer timeline. They have a super-efficient chipset and hardware design to provide long battery life, but they use the chip Core 2 Solo or Duo, running Vista or Windows 7, and can have screens as big as you want.
CULV designs pretty much used to as ultraportables for traveling business executives use on aircraft. The main models included IBM X series and Toshiba protege, with the Apple MacBook Air. This also will provide an opportunity for Apple to provide a "netbook" is lighter and has a battery life far better than the MacBook Air for much less than half the price.
